W.O.S. - "What's Op, Sammy?" - Sam Amidon's Tumblr

If you're not following Sam Amidon's new tumblr blog, I recommend it. It's good to see him bloggifying again. Mr Amidon is a folksinger, movie star, and mid-level Virgin Airlines executive. (He & I were in the legendary Liberal Arts college band Radiohead a decade ago - not to be confused with the British band - so if you ever see posters around Westchester County maintaining "RADIOHEAD WILL REUNITE!" that's the reason.)

This was a good series from W.O.S. (which I believe stands for "What's Op, Sammy?") He responded to several e-mails he received intended for other S. Amidons:

The Swell Season for Arnophilia

I got a phone call midday Tuesday (in Berkeley, CA) from an 'unknown' number, & it was Sam Amidon calling from Oxford, England, looking for recommendations for a pub to sit & read in for a while! I navigated him to the Turf Tavern, which is hidden up a windy alley & has a beautiful beer garden & rare ales on tap. Here's a video he just posted of him singing at the Royal Festival Hall (in Bangladesh I think).

Nico Muhly's "The Only Tune" with Sam Amidon

Someone on Twitter named awork wrote "I generally like the music of NIco Muhly but the vocal on The Only Tune is obnoxious", which was promptly retweeted by both Sam Amidon & Nico Muhly. The tweet linked to lala.com, where I see you can listen to the whole piece, which you should if you haven't heard it yet, from Muhly's 2008 album Mothertongue. I heard them do it live twice last year in San Francisco & L.A. The picture is of a Humpback Whale tongue, get your mind out of the gutter.

This weekend was a troubling time for the Real Sam Amidon project. If you haven't been following the development, a mysterious & poetic new impostor appeared on Day Five, the green "sam amidon and ham", following the shortlived "iamsamamidon". Without any prodding from samamamidon, several new sam amidons appeared on the scene on Saturday, spinning quickly into chaos - - - One of the new ones, "SamSamidon", has a naughty tongue, & I think I have to censor some of his or her twots for the bigosphere.
