Young Manasseh's Stains & On the Trail of Young Manasseh - The Manna Sustains

And now! We are excited to announce that we are beginning to put songs from our new EPIC MURDER BALLAD SONG CYCLE, The Manna Sustains, on youtubes. It is narrative collection of folk songs, with many characters weaving thru the story, a bit of mystery and INTRIGUE, plenty of sex, drinking and drugs. We would like to perform the whole thing some time this summer, but in the meantime, for lack of anything better to do with this project, here are videos of The Manna Tease singing the first two songs: "Young Manasseh's Stains" and "On the Trail of Young Manasseh."
Update: I think the live version from our Adobe books gig is better than the one originally posted (below):

Young Manasseh's Stains

...wherein Young Manasseh comes to Arkansas City to find romance, goes on a Bender, and elopes with the Sheriff's Deputy.

Young Manasseh came to Arkansas City for to find romance.

The lights were bright & the girls were pretty, but Manny was too drunk to dance.
He laid on the steps of City Hall to take a nap.
He dreamt of alligators & an apple as round as the equator,
And his feet went tappity-tap-tap-tappity-tap.
Then descendin' the steps of City Hall came a deputy sheriff named Maple Seraph,
And said, Manny, you smell like poop.

Young Manasseh woke up in the drunk tank hungover as Colonel Qaddafi.
Sheriff Maple said you have only yourself to thank. Would you like a cup of coffee?
Manny & Maple went to get some cappuccino next door at the casino owned by Donald Trump.
They talked about the economy & the rising of the sea,
And his heart went thumputy thump-thump-thumpity thump-thump-thumpity-thump.
They switched to margaritas & shots of tequilas & bet on the Kenos,
And they put all their money on red.

Young Manesseh woke up in a nasty motel where Elvis once stayed.
Next to Manny was the Sheriff Maple & her rifle on the bed where they laid.
She said, Manny, oh, Man, we need to make a plan, 'cause I think we killed a man, but first where's my clothes?
Then he kissed her on the nose & on her roast beef toes,
And she moaned out whoa-whoa who's-your-do-see-dodo-doze whoa-whoa-whoa-whoze.
They hopped in his '90's Toyota & drove to the border of Louisiana,
Where they ditched the rifle.

Young Manasseh ran out of gas in the Mississippi swamp.
He & Sheriff Maple set up a muddy igloo & made love in the muddy damp.
He said, you don't have to decide, but if you'd like to be my bride, I've got nothing to provide, & she said Ja!
So they killed an alligator & they baked an apple fritter, & danced till later,
And they sang la la la la la la la la la la la.
The moral of the tale's if you want to kill a whale, you don't always need a harpoon,
But it helps get the Sheriff drunk.

UPDATE: Introducing new illuminated sheet music! "Young Manasseh's Stains" with illustrations by Grainne Proinseas:
Young Manassehs Stains, from The Manna Sustains - Illuminated Sheet Music

On the Trail of Young Manasseh

...wherein we find our hero, Special Agent Francis, searching for the fugitive Young Manasseh up in Alaska.

Special Agent Francis on the trail of Young Manasseh,
Hitched a lift with a hang-glider from Ketchikan, Alaska:
Her name's Amanda, from Ketchikan, Alaska!

Special Agent Francis on the trail of Young Manasseh,
Hitched a lift with a hang-glider from Ketchikan, Alaska:
Her name's Amanda, from Ketchikan, Alaska!

As they soared above the glacier,
Fantastic as fallacier,
On the trail of Young Manasseh,
Swarms of clouds unfold to form a boreal castle,
Swarms of clouds unfold to form a boreal....

Amanda sang,
Where does the ice go when it melts into my glass of Scotch?
Francis said,
Should you be drinking while you're hang-gliding, miss?
Amanda sang,
When we die in the Arctic, do the glaciers weep & watch?
Francis replied,
Please pay attention where you're guiding us.

Special Agent Francis, airsick, & sick of her song,
Ditched his hippie hang-glider & hitchhiked to Saskatchewan,
Goodbye Amanda! see you never!

Three Recordings of "Home in Pasadena"

I found this lovely youtube video from a blog called Ukulelia. It's the songwriter Harry Warren found at his house in Southern California by Ian Whitcomb, where they sing "Home in Pasadena" in duet. (Warren is also famous for writing "Chattanooga Choo-choo," "Jeepers Creepers," and like a zillion other famous Jazz Age songs.)

And here's two other youtubes of the song.

Oh, & did we mention that Miss Minnie Molly Mary, of The Manna Tease, has saved up enough money giving twennydolla haircuts to order an electric flea ukulele for our band. It's got the denim design. Hurrah!

Song: Corn Whiskey

We're slowly working thru our corn liquor repertoire for the youtubes. HERE are original lyrics to a familiar tune:

Won't you please "like" our new band The Manna Tease on facebooks here.(we're working on some exciting new projects, which may start to emerge this year some time.)
Lyrics & chords to dozens of songs about corn liquor & corn whiskey can be found in our USEFUL How To Make Corn Liquor SONGBOOK. For your convenience, I'll reprint this one here:

Corn Whiskey (to the tune of “The Times They Are A-Changin’”)

G emin C G
The summer is ending, the harvest is nigh,
G D
The ears of the maize are eleven feet high,
G emin C G
(It’s taller, dear Oscar, than an elephant’s eye!)
G D
The rays of the sun unrelentin’...
D D/C G/B D/A
The better we live, then the better we die,
G C D G
Oh the corn mash is fermentin’.

Get you copper kettle & light up a fire,
We’ll pass a corn pipe while the smoke rises higher,
And watch the clear drops till the evening expires,
And sing while the jugs are a-fillin’.
Ten drunken old men is an angelic choir:
For the corn whiskey’s distillin’.

Her hair it is flax & her dress it is red
Her bosom is full as the jars in my shed,
Her bubbly bead has gone straight to my head:
Is she thinking what I think she’s thinkin’?
We’ll share us a jar & wake up in my bed,
For it’s corn whiskey we’re drinkin’.

Goddamn Alex Hamilton raisin’ the tax,
We’re ready with rifles for George’s attacks,
They’ll first take our hooch then the shirts off our backs.
Our mob is as high as white lightnin’.
My flesh it bleeds corn from the blade of your ax...
It’s for corn whiskey we’re fightin’.

Song: Corn Whiskey (The Brodys) - The Manna Tease

Another corn liquor song from The Manna Tease - a cover of Corn Whiskey by The Brodys:

Please "like" our new band The Manna Tease on the facebooks here. The chords & lyrics we use for this song can be found in our How To Make Corn Liquor SONGBOOK.

Corn Whiskey - The Brodys [43:14 on the mix]

And we’re drinking corn whiskey tonight...

G C G
We drink corn whiskey in the midday sun.
G D
We pass round the jar till the last swig is gone.
G C G
Be us winners or losers we share in the toast
G D C G
When we drink corn whiskey, we boast & we boast:
G D C G
When it comes to corn whiskey, I drink the most.

We drink corn whiskey when a moon she does rise,
We’re singing our tune with a tear in our eyes.
Till the fire burns down & the silence is thick.
Then we pass round the jar for our last little sip.
And we don’t give a damn when we’re totally pissed.

C D G

Yes, & we’ll all sit around the fire.

C D G

And we’ll all get higher & higher.

C D G emin

And we’ll brag about who’s the biggest damn liar.

C D C G

We’re drinking corn whiskey tonight, tonight.

G D C G

Yes, we’re drinking corn whiskey tonight.

When a morning dew covers the grass in the fields,
And the wee dance of smoke the fire does yield.
We’ll crawl from our slumbers with a squint in our eyes,
Cause we’re drinking corn whiskey in our paradise.
Yeah, we’re drinking corn whiskey till the day that we die.

Yes, & we’ll all sit around the fire, &c...

We raise up corn whiskey till all of our mates,
To the ones that we’ve hooked but somehow got away.
From the brogue next to you & the ones in our hearts,
We remember you fondly, of us you’re a part.
And we’ll save you a swallow from the bottom of the jar.

Yes, & we’ll all sit around the fire, &c...

Yes, & we’ll all sit around the fire, &c...

Father Drank Himself to Death (Gila Monster Version) - Demo mp3

I apologize if the recordings I'm sharing on this blog continue to get stranger in the new decade. There are several different settings of this text, Father Drank Himself To Death. This is the "Gila Monster" version, recorded today for the Friends Around the Campfire Stuck Home Syndrome, (formerly known as the Special Summer Electric Ukulele Covers Project).

The album Stuck Home Syndrome available here! Friends around the Campfire on facebooks here!

The new verse added for this new version:
Once we owned a Gila monster,
But its terrarium was never dry.
Italic
So we set it free near Stockton,
Now it lives beneath the sky.

New Decade - New Versions of Old Songs: "I'm Goin' To See My Lord" (Red Hook Version) mp3

I'll start the twenty-preteens with a new recording of a new version of my classic naughties-era song "I'm goin' to see my Lord" (the melody has been altered) - recorded yesterday, which was a palindrome day (01-02-2010). This all for my Friends Around the Campfire Special Electric Ukulele Covers Project - now with a fancy new name for the album, namely Stuck Home Syndrome. How do you like it?

The lyrics were once posted here. Stay tuned for the stirring conclusion to the Stuck Home Syndrome album.

Song: "Children of Darkness" - (Richard Fariña cover on electric ukulele)

One of my favorite songs, "Children of Darkness", is now added to my special Friends Around the Campfire Special Summer Electric Ukulele Covers Project. It was originally recorded by Mimi & Richard Fariña in 1965 - I first learned it from Joan Baez's 1967 version. And the deconstructed winds in my sloppy homemade production are a nod to Professor Peter Schickele's arrangements from that album. Download this mp3 here. More Friends Around the Campfire.

Song: "Yes, Ma'am, I Can Boogie."

I was thinking about that Baccara song all morning, the tenth best selling song of all time, so here's my quickie amateur home-recording (as a present for a friend.) I needed more cover songs for my Friends Around the Campfire Special Summer Electric Ukulele Covers project. (The last few cuts for it have been covers of my own songs.) So here's "Yes, Ma'am, I Can Boogie," with a big trash bin as my disco beat, & the obligatory synth accordion. This mp3 can be downloaded free here.

Song: Gospel Train (Special 2009 "Red Hook" Version)

Originally, this song was the titular track from my homemade album "Gospel Train". I'm now re-recording it with my electric ukulele & synthesizers for my on-going Friends Around the Campfire Special Electric Ukulele Summer Covers EP - you better believe I'm still working on my summer project. Also, my covers album has broadened to allow me to cover my own songs. The 2006 recording of "Gospel Train" was once posted with the lyrics here.
Today's recording we refer to as the "Red Hook" version, for obvious reasons.

Ukulele Song: "My Girlfriend is a Doula"

I just wrote this thirty-second song, "My Girlfriend is a Doula", for my doula friend & her boyfriend. Rather than develop the song properly, I opted for the slow fade with synthesizer rock-out. The subject matter is of course a development on the universal theme, difficulties of dating women engaged in the midwifery trade. Download it here, if you wish.

Exclusive Soundtrack for The Horrors of the Sunflowers

Our exciting summer vampire/zombie flick made with kids from Mr Quill's small village in Bulgaria is out! The Horrors of the Sunflowers. And also, available for free, is the music Mr Olaf Mary & I made for the soundtrack. Click here if you require to download the mp3s.

As an EP, it's only about five minutes long. Of course, to complete the album, you'd also need Barış Manço's "Alla Beni Pulla Beni", the centerpiece of the film, which you could download from iTunes here.

Here's the film itself, if you haven't seen it! Not available on NetFlix nor at any hot festivals, only on youtubes & our weblogs. Help out with the Bulgarian student film project, more information about that here.
