Three Years Ago: "Bring Your Mug To-night" & "Live Blogging from the Pomegranate Raspberry Mulled Wine & Whiskey 2007 Sendoff Festivus Eritrean Party"

Once again, we bring you Three Years Ago, an always special segment which celebrates this blog's continued longevity by re-posting posts from exactly three years ago. TODAY, a double header, starting with an advertisement for the day's Christmas party, "Bring Your Mug To-night", followed by the "Live Blogging from the Pomegranate Raspberry Mulled Wine & Whiskey 2007 Sendoff Festivus Eritrean Party". If you so desire, you could make the mulled wine recipe I printed in the first post (which I realize now is quite different from how I did it this year at my War on Christmas party; I suppose it evolves each year, this one had more fresh squeezed oranges, black currant juice, no poms or berries & less zest. I also used something like 14 bottles of two buck chuck.) Then, starting at 17.15 Pacific time, for the hardcore, relive the party minute by minute.

__________________________________

Several of the attendees who have R.S.V.P.'d to my invite for tonight's party are fictional, but it should be a smashing party. Bring a mug! I rather strained my back yesterday carrying a case of Charles Shaw Shiraz on the BART from the new Trader Joe's on College Avenue. In preparation for this epic mulled wine, I have had pomegranates & raspberries soaking in Jim Beam whiskey for two weeks in the window. In addition to the wine & whiskey, the following things will be added to the simmering Glühwein:

-The juice & zest from six large organic oranges.
-The juice squeezed from a dozen key limes
-Raspberries

-Red currants
-The seeds from a large pomegranate
-Many cinnamon sticks
-Nutmeg

-Cardamom
-Cloves
-Brown &/or unrefined white sugar, to taste

-More rum & more whiskey & more wine.

It's important, of course, not to let the cauldron ever come to a boil (which will decrease the alcohol content). Proselytes of the Mimosa's Witnesses will notice that Glühwein in an evening, festivus-time cousin to the Mimosa, replete with all the ingredients for secular transubstantiation. Check back to this website later, there may be Live Blogging. Here is from the original invite:

You can come earlier if you desire, & help me mull the wine, & there may be food.

The following costumes are discouraged:

-Keebler Elf
-Condoleeza Rice Elf
-Aphid or other Sternorrhyncha
-Disney Princess

-Sen. Arlen Spekter (R-Penn.)
-Cole Porter
-Luna Lovegood

-Amos or any other minor Old Testament Prophet

While these would be allowed, of course, some creative variation would be appreciated this year.
Bringing a mug would assist in transporting the mulled wine from the large s
teaming pot to your mouth.
My apartment is conveniently located across from the Ashby BART station:

This is a picture of a Barack Obama butter sculpture, by Duffy Lyon, the famous "Butter Cow Lady" from Iowa fairs. She has endorsed the candidate.

Welcome to the Live Blogging of the Glühwein Party, for all of you poor cold losers who decided to settle in other parts of the world. It's 5:30 P.M. Pacific Time, 40 degrees in Berkeley, somewhat ugly weather here. Life is short, but the Webb Block has been polished & dusted, roses are on the table. A dvd of a fireplace burns on the tv set.

5:15. I am alone & I wash my hands, & make my delicious Puffed Millet Cookies.
5:30. Liam calls from the recycled paper office & tells me he is on his way, bringing friends.
5:40. Six bottles of Two Buck Chuck Shiraz are opened & emptied into a large cauldron.
6:40. Liam & friends have come & gone back to the store for more cheese & more bread. The past hour has been spent slowly warming up the wine & adding many many delicious ingredients. The third movement of Gorecki's Third Symphony, coming on randomly, made the de-seeding of the pomegranate much more emotional than it might otherwise have been.
8:30. Ten people are here eating cookies, Stolen, pineapples, & drinking Liam's amazing Raspberry Whiskey (which has been fermenting for two months), & my mulled wine. Cheeks are beginning to look a bit flushed.
9:00. A brief interlude to watch Leopard Slug sex.
10:15. Virtue's hit the rum.
10:30. The roses on the table have been replaced by a Trivial Pursuit board.
11:00. Liam creepily correctly answers "Fifty-four" to the question "What was the number of Gunther Toody's patrol car?"
11:30. Sixty-six-point-six percent of the party up-&-runs out the door towards the penultimate BART train.
12:00 A.M. My upstairs neighbor makes an appearance with her husband, erroneously thinking they have interrupted something between me & the remaining guest. They drink a glass of Glühwein & borrow The Princess Bride.
12:45. I am alone with a few glasses of mulled wine to go. A few hours ago I rejuvenated it with dark rum, sugar, & limes. It's sticking to my teeth, but I'm determined to see the sun rise, so, Merry Festivus to all, & to all a googily opulent yarblat.

Alas Alive Ablogging the riverrun past even adam's apfelgarage. Post Number Orange

As we hold our breasts in anticipation of Senator John McCain's big call-to-arms, a few thoughts on leadership from Sun Tsu. How can we rally up patriotism without bad-guys against us? Never trust a man who surrounds himself with dancing white people. What is this mysterious smell coming from the South-East corner of my room? "Weird-Al" Yankovic is in the house!! Three strikes, &, it's the SAME synth-string composer for the John McCain biopic, the "mama's boy" should descend from the solid ground soon enough. We are here live.

9:08pm Central Time The war hero is captured, tortured, & held hostage for five years.

9:10pm Crap! I just realized this whole event is just propaganda!

McCain! "poop your pants! poop your pants! poop your pants!"

ugly green background is back!

9:18pm Wow, earlier, I was totally going to make a joke about "when are they going to drop the puke-green backdrop" like his last big speech.

no, but really, what great luck. I'm sure they didn't want this speech to take place against an ugly green background. he's been mocked relentlessly for it before and now his big moment is happening in front of it. hahaha

There are Iraq veterans against the war all over the lace in there. The RNC is a fucking leaky bucket. their security sucks because their nominee isn't black, now it's biting them in the ass.

They tried to fix the background, but it looks like alge slime. worse than before.

The Green-Screen is going psychedelic forest on us. I knew we should have been hitting something harder than Gobiden.

Now it's blue! what a fucking mess!

CODE PINK IN THE HOUSE! IN A HOT SATIN NEGLIGEE!

what do you guys think of the bright blue background they settled on after going through the two embarrassing greens?

9:27pm It is pretty amazing all these politicians with millions of kids themselves, & pregnant teenage kids, are so gung-ho for abstinence only education.

9:30pm I'm having trouble conceiving of how boring this man is - - - - - but yet how wildly enthusiastic the crowd is cheering at how boring he is. Strange dissonance, like P.D.Q. Bach's sportscasting of the Beethoven symphony.

OMG so many empty seats when they went to the wide shot. holy crap. there's nobody there.

I think they must have been bought by season-ticket holders who couldn't make it - total rich white thing to do.

9:39pm Shaun suggested that with the green-screen, then the blue-screen, he's just begging for some computer-generated effects to spice up his space-flight.

9:41pm How come everyone's always down on the bureaucrats? Isn't that a sizeable minority of the American workforce?

Is this the economic policy meat of this speech? we'll give you a temporary shitty job while we find you or make for you a not-as-shitty job?

9:45pm McCain gets a standing ovation for dissing bad teachers.

oh yeah I choose a private schoool for my kids all the time. I just can't pay for it.

Is it just me, or is this speech really really long?

9:48pm Finally, some fear-mongering. I could barely find my bearings.
He's comparing Russia with Iran??
...no, he wants to 'establish good relations with Russia.' I afraid of them too.

The man who doesn't know how to use the internet just said "the information technology revolution".

did he already forget that this crowd loves Palin because she is a bitter hateful partisan? they don't want him to "reach out to democrats and independants".

9:55pm There's no mistaking, the crowd is getting less jubilant & uproarious. Even Wagner operas break for an intermission every fifty-five minutes or so.

THIS AGAIN????....wait, getting shot down is a laugh line now?

9:57pm I always wanted to hear John McCain's POW story, now is my chance.

there's a bunch of token black people. drink james! drink!

Only if they show the same one repeatedly. Like those actual Africans next to Roberta McCain. Sadly, there was a queue of African-Americans waiting around the corner to fill in all those empty stadium seats, but they were bulk-sold to hawkers, who accidentally went to New Orleans instead.

"history has anointed me to save my country" ???? did he already win and I didn't get the memo? maybe he's the antichrist.

No, he was making fun of BHO's presumptuousity. That speech was more than twice as long as Obama's.

10:06pm I love this Raisin' McCain song!

10:09pm World record for number of balloons dropped, added several carbon tons to the atmosphere. I think I saw a token black balloon, so, drink up.
Phony digital fire-works on the screen!

10:14pm I hope there's at least one balloon casualty. Seriously, tho, the pundits & talking-pointers make fun of Obama's "Styrofoam" columns & exultant fireworks, & then the RNC has a ten-minute-long balloon fest with computer-generated fireworks in a half-empty indoor stadium? It's because they're more in touch with the common man.

10:19pm McCain & Cindy Lou are returning to the stage!! I hope he's going to finish up that more-or-less unfinished speech.

It seems like this dancing, celebrating, & bad music could go on till the line for the Minnesota Airport bathroom is a mile-long, so, adieu, thank you nation for hanging out during our live-blog.

Live-Blogging th'ethereal sky

Having been untimely ripped from a deep nap by this sonorous bottle of Gobiden Bourbon Whisky in my cabinet, I'm ready to watch some America-loving Americans brag about what a good job they do running the country that they love. Friends from this & neighboring galaxies are invited to watch along & comment, I think several of our far-flung correspondents will be turning around & getting a little bit closer as John McCain, that wacky maverick, puts aside his stage-freight & takes the podium.

Here's the CNN live-video feed:

http://www.cnn.com/video/#

Clean-shaven white men will invariably be interspersed with crazy bearded hermaphrodites (diversity) & hot blonde women (the party's base.) It's ten degrees hotter in San Francisco than it is in Berkeley (the reversal of the norm, San Francisco's cruel wintry Augusts.)

George H. W. Quiselgúr signing in as "Red Indian" Red.

7:30pm Central Time
- Republican Fashion: cowboy hats are in for the fall season.

7:34pm
- The GOP are super good about electing a ton of middle-aged white women to office. Good for them!

7:41pm - Holy Shit! New York City is under attack! There's smoke everywhere & people running around!

7:45pm - How on earth did they find a right-wing-leaning athlete? He's rambling about some Czechoslovakian gold-medalist who supports McCain.
Whoa, he actually just said, "whether you're a decathlete or a politician, we must stand together & support America"... Did they just exclude me?

7:55pm Dancing around to good old Rock and Roll music, there's no denying it, a lot of women are Republicans.

Harry Grayson - Mustard Yellow, ready and available for comment.

Senator Lindsey Graham on stage. The democrats need some better talking points about why it's sort of pitiful if the surge works. Like, it's like if an aspirin helps relieve a hangover head-ache, you can't undo the tequila reality.

Where's our other correspondents. Mongolia, you there?

8:09pm That's because Obama was against the war, doofus-butt. And the war is unwinnable, we've certainly already been "defeat"-ed, whatever that word means, I'm not familiar with the definition of that word. Here comes the Wasilla mayor's biopic.

8:15pm Apparently the GOP's budget can't afford a non-synthesized string section.
Christ, Sen. Ridge is McCain's friend too, how many friends does this guy have? Isn't he spreading himself a bit thin?

NEW POST! Move Up!

August 31, 2008

August Review: "Gushes of Blood, Gushes of Tears: got all these gushes coming out of my VJ"

Welcome to September!
Last night, Jenny Ruth & I were the only staff at a beautiful wedding in a forested park in San Francisco (a small city with a larger population than Alaska.) It was a totally beautiful, small friends & family affair, & the two brides kept asking us what people usual do at weddings: like "when do we do a toast?", or Jenny would say "do you two want to cut the cake in the traditional way," & they'd ask "how's that?" Even tho the brides & the bridesmaids helped set up & clean up, I'm still so sore today on this Labor Day I can barely move my body to the bathroom, let alone the hike thru the redwoods I had planned. And I only mention this, because I believe in love, & altho you may ache the next day, I say to people who are against gay marriages, as a general rule they are so much more fun than yuppie marriages, Jesus ones or drunken Vegas ones.

For anyone just turning in to our spectacularly humble blog, it's been quite a month. A particular highlight was the first-ever international live-blogging, with our correspondences from various cities & countries that begin with the letter 'B', most of us with names beginning with 'B', non-sequentially updating a series of posts about the final night of the Democratic National Convention in Denver. If you'd like to read thru this in order, with all the steppes & mesas of a Tony Hillerman novel, here are links in bold rainbowed chapters.

I. Prelude & The Committee discusses the Logistics.
II. Brains Prematurely Articulates, others have to rush from the bathtubs to set up the live CNN feed.

III. Brooklyn Arrives, Experiments with Zenlike short posts.
IV. Welcomes all Around & Al Gore's Speech.

V. Word from Bulgaria, & the Liberal Crepe Warfare

VI. Gobiden

VII. Climax, Wrapup, Dénouement, Cigarettes
Now that Hurricane Gustav has kept George W. Bush from reminding voters that he's part of the same noble party as John McCain, who knows what will happen this Thursday Night? It might be worthwhile to check this website just in case. Stay tuned in September for Olaf Mary's first posts of artwork from Morocco, white gospel tunes from Berkeley, meditations on the science of dust, poetry based on Wayne's World, & who the frick knows what else.

UPDATE: September 1st, 2008, 11:55am. Talking about the plan of drinking Sazeracs on Friday Morning at 5am in Bulgaria (during McCain's convention speech) may be altered due to the difficulty of finding Peychaud's bitters in the Balkans. From Thomas Pynchon's Against the Day:

They finally parted company in New Orleans after a confused & repetitive headache of a night that began at the establishment of Monsieur Peychaud, where the Sazeracs, tho said to've been invented there, were not a patch, it seemed to Reef [Traverse], on those available at Bob Stockton's bar in Denver, tho the Absinthe Frappés were another matter.
-pg. 368.

I'm guessing Pynchon made up the Absinthe Frappé, altho it doesn't seem to be impossible to duplicate from fiction; & timely, considering the reintroduction of proper absinthe to America & the current shaken & frothy state of New Orleans. I'll call David Chang & ask him how to get sea-foam on the top of an absinthe drink. (Also, considering the murky origins of America's first cocktails, I think it's a bloody good joke that the sazeracs at "Bob Stockton's bar in Denver" would be better than at Monsieur Peychaud's.) We may need a drink of this caliber to get thru Thursday night.

Live-Bloggin' from Denver via Elsewhere: Post Letter "D" - Frost on the Windshield

Robert Frost once wrote:

Melt the glass and leave the sticks
Like a hermit's crucifix;
Burst into my narrow stall;

Swing the picture on the wall;

Run the rattling pages o'er;

Scatter poems on the floor;
Turn the poet out the door.

Which brings us back to Obama's big convention speech, which is happening HERE LIVE NOW, commented upon by our crack team of bloggers. I recommend refreshing the page very very often.

8:39pm Mountain Time. Oh, so now he cares about health care too?

8:43 MST - In linguistics there is something called the schwa, it's the sound made when your tongue is at its most restful area of the mouth, directly between all three extreme vowel sounds (front, rear, and top of mouth). He does that with any word ending in -y. Like "country," "community," and "bureaucracy."

I think he's best when he calms his voice. Ooh! JFK reference (8:42)! So many valid tie-ins: Lincoln, MLK, JFK; must heart Obama.

Michelle's dress is definitely floral, Jenny Ruth insists, but it seems from some alien landscape.

8:56pm This speech is sounding beautiful to me. Has anyone mentioned in the past five minutes that this Joe-Biden whisky is fucking de
licious? I eat up that "this is not about me" rhetoric!

9:00
pm Again, I would have loved to have heard something more stentorian than an electric guitar play right after he finished.

9:05pm Okay, I take it back, there's some seriously dramatic movie music going on right now.

Grainne: music choices are weird, but to me, satisfying. a country song about new york city. how political!

Liam: "Now I just want the first gay president. I'm so over this. I'm sick of first ladies.
Grace: what if the president's a l
esbo?
Liam: Y
eah, okay, well, that's different.

Grainne(dissapointed): hey wasn't the Jewish benediction supposed to be tonight?
Liam: that's bullshit. bullshit. all this christian bullshit.

Grainne: Nancy pelosi is cute as hell. and her shiny clothes get me excited.

Brains: It's that point where the cable news panel or radio punditry jump in with 3rd-grade reading level opining, but online from the Demconvention.com feed they just followed O along the stage,
and the music orchestral feed was perfectly loud. Instant cinematics? Never thought they were possible. Pretty cool.

Pelosi, my local rep, is such a cheeseball. Fizzle. Out.

(On a five minute delay or somethi
ng.)

9:13pm Sorry Liam, first gay president was James Buchanan, also one of the worst in history (presided over the break-up of the union). Pelosi - San Francisco in the house, what what!

Well, I guess that's it for now. CNN is already playing it in re-run. Stay tuned if you desire as we explore the MSM & blogosphere's reactions. Otherwises, thanks for visiting & to all a good night!

who is this Republican biotch? why are they letting her talk so much?

CNN's "Republican Strategist" - we needs to get ourselves one of those!

Liam: :
"I hope he punches her in the nose with his gay fist"

Grainne: so we have someone to yell at?

Grainne: has everyone seen these ugly-ass meth heads who wanted to kill president O?
fuckin ugly, right?

Liam: "who invented this attack dog thing?"
Powers: I think it's a football term
Liam: I think it's a term about animals.

McCain's response actually said "when the temple comes down", et cetera. The only thing those guys know how to say these days is "not ready," "not ready." Wasn't both Lincoln & Clinton & several other fairly good presidents basically as qualified as BHO?

Grainne: I just want to point out that Liam and I got the most pleasure of the night out of fucking up James' layout of this blog post by putting the meth heads up there with Frost and the fat chick. but we knew you'd fix it, you bastard.

I'm not that anal, but what about my beautiful woman! Let me do it for her!
I agree, actually, it looked great up there, but it messed up the poetry format. We're trying to be semi-professional here.
Careful, I have the power to revoke your administrative capacity.
Take another finger of Joe Biden for that.

9:41pm You realize I've been naked this whole time, blogging is one hell of a way to make a living. In Berkeley, with flowers in my hair.

Grainne: I propose that if our ticket wins in November, this delicious whiskey be known henceforward by the name of the forty-fourth vice president of the United States. If we lose, alas, may it remain as it is.

I think we can do little to stop the renaming of Jim Beam as Gobiden or what have you, the 47th VP, under any & every circumstance.

9:51pm Someone just said "I think we just watched Barack Obama become a great president tonight." What does that mean?

10:06pm Okay, goodnight, I'm off to watch some daily shows. I hope you all sleep as deep as Colorado Locusts - (meaning, for at least a hundred years, if not forever.) Ciao.

Alive-Blogging Live from Obama Nation USA! Post 2: A brief explanation of the beverage Gobias Gobama

For readers of George Eliot's novels & heavy healthy dyspeptics, this joke should require no preamble, but I'll brief in the rest of Obama Nation:
In Arrested Development, a canceled tv sitcom on Fox, there is a character named G.O.B. (played by Will Arnett), pronounced "Jobe" but frequently misponounced "gob". With the character Tobias (David Cross), he proposed to open a "carbo-loading" coffee shop called "Gobias" - "as in, 'Go Buy Us some Coffee'" - obviously, it is mispronounced "Joe-buy-us." Et cetera. Mirth & canned laughter ensues.
When Presidential Candidate & Illinois' junior senator, Barack Obama, announced his running mate would be Sen. Joe Biden, portmanteau enthusiasts across the internets immediately started calling the team "Joe-bama" & "Obiden."
Tonight, we are spread far across this majestic country, united by one common pursuit - live-blogging the Obamamania & drinking Jim Beam, which for the sake of it all, we've rechristened "Joe-Biden-on-the-Colorado-Rocks."

Which brings us to the following obvious joke:

Gobias Gobama
which of course can be mispronounced many ways.
And now we return to our scheduled Live Blogging.

7:56pm Mountain Time Does anyone still actually like Rock & Roll Music? I'm nostalgic for when politicians played Copland's music, dramatic open-plains orchestral stuff. Ah, Aaron Copland, gay leftist Aaron Copland. I'd vote for anything set to Billy the Kid.

Grainne+Olaf:
Barack: "That little American flag was the only toy I had. It was everything to me. It was my Fork. I ate with it."

Barack: "I see myself in lots and lots of white people wearing hardhats"

8:14pm
That's Obama, I'm sure of it, I'd recognize him anywhere.

Grainne:
Michelle never ceases to amaze me. Is her dress red tiger-stripe or am I hallucinating?
It's kind of cool how they match Malia and Sasha's dresses to their mom's. I dig stagecraft.

8:21pm Why on earth did the Rupubs agree to have their conference immediately after this, & how!? They're all going to look so cute & tiny next week.

Grainne: when are we going to talk about eating white babies?

5:25am in Bulgaria - Time for a working man's first big sip of Gob Biden Bourbon.

8:27 MST - He really needs to top his 2004 convention speech. I'm anticipating goosebumps soon, especially towards the end, but so far, Platitudes count: 3. OVerly repeated stump elements: 5. Let's go Barry, pick it up!

8:28pm
What does Barack Obama have against John McCain? He keeps mentioning him like a man obsessed. Get over him.

Grainne: is he deliberately not bringing up the "I have a dream" anniversary? Not wanting to emphasize his blackness in such a big bright spotlight? hm. wonder where that will go.

8:33pm Jenny Ruth says: "Same old shit". But bigger, I would add.
I think he's saving MLK for a big moment.

Grainne: it sure is refreshing when the American Flag is not in the frame at all, and O has that giant Japanese-lantern lookin' background instead.

American Flags are so last century. NEW POST ABOVE! CLEAN CUP! MOVE DOWN!

STAY TUNED TONIGHT - - - for the first ever greater inner itwaslost.org community live-blog of the Big Obamamania in Denver

What do you think friends?
Thursday 6pm (Pacific Time) onward.

Mr Quill, can you open & watch the following live video:
http://www.cnn.com/video/#
& do you feel like staying up into the wee hours on Thursday night?

Team Live-blogging? A post that everyone can edit?
I say we have different colors like they do at the Economist:
http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2008/08/two_for_tuesday_1.cfm

How does the people feel about this idea?
I also propose, if y'all are into it, just to standardize the institution that evening, that we agree on a common drink. I propose Jim Beam whiskey, but that's open for (eighteen or nineteen) debates.

Yes. Also Liam is here with me in NY, so he will hopefully participate in the live-blogging from this end. I fear we may not understand the logistics of live blogging, could someone briefly explain what it entails? (I'm looking at you, J.Henry)
what time shall we commence?
I approve of Jim Beam. I may officialy re-christen it "Joe Biden" for the night.

It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. I love the idea, friends. Unfortunately, as a [____________], I must decline the opportunity...

All right, that's a lie. Or rather, it's a lie that I would care about such things. Unfortunately, the reality of my internet connection is that video streaming is not really a possibility. Also, I think I will actually be boarding a bus at about that time to go to what will without a doubt be a fascinating [_________] about how super-awesome it's going to be to get started with actually [_________]l. um... but I'll try to hit you guys up early in the morning before I leave.

Give 'em hell, kids.

Also, go Sox! Bury those Yankees.

And tomorrow evening I'll drink some Joe Biden to your health.

Keep me posted on future team-blogging exercises.

Dearest Beloved.

I'm torn between doing it the Economist style, with people editing & updating the content of a post in different colors (Mrs Red, Mr Purple, et cetera) with the times in bold, like 7:15pm, all times Mountain? Or, alternately, as Mr Brains suggested, like the Daily Kos, having a short post or a series of short posts, & all our minute-by-minute comments can be in the comment section.

So I suggest: BOTH. I'll make you all "blog administrators", & anything like videos or pictures or transcendental poetry can be added to the body, & grow organically, & comments will be comments, & theoretically anyone on the BLOGOSPHERE can join-in, don't hold your breasts.. & we'll have perhaps a couple different posts thru-out the evening, & play it by the dog's nipples
Bryan, as much as I love New Belgium's 1554 Black Ale (elitist beer from Fort Collins, but is it black enough?), I think Joe-Biden-on-the-Colorado-
Rocks wins the silent majority. Breasts.

Liam, a short explanation of live-blogging, live-blog-parodies, & other oddities to your ear: Welcome to the 21st-century, live free or get out.

I will always love you,
J.H. Hassan D. Welsch
