For Your Consideration: Kanye West's Runaway

Hello. Sorry I haven't been adding my biting cultural commentary amongst Grainne's lovely fashion illustrations, but it's been a wild last month. Meanwhile, Mr Kanye West put his entire short film Runaway on YouTube, and it's worth a watch. He seems to realize he's not a great actor, and keeps his dialog & lip-sinking to a minimum. Advantages: the art direction is beautiful, and it dwells on the modern ballet dance for a good 50% of the movie, and of course the music from his album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" is pretty damn good. Disadvantages: Hmm, this could be discussed in the comments, I don't want to be too hasty with criticism. The plot is reminiscent of Shakespeare's ambiguous poem "The Phoenix & the Turtle," about the love of a mortal with a phoenix - - perhaps Shakespeare's strange text could serve as commentary on Kanye's allegorical music video, or visa versa:

Property was thus appall'd,
That the self was not the same;
Single nature's double name
Neither two nor one was call'd.

Reason, in itself confounded,
Saw division grow together;
To themselves yet either-neither,
Simple were so well compounded.

Hey James just writing to let you know of a mistake in the editorial above. Where it states West's music is "pretty damn good" it should actually say "pretty damn so-so; like satisfying one's thirst with a pin pricked drop of salt water, while a short walk around the corner would reveal an enormous, winding mountain delivering a crystal clear waterfall with a bunch of sanitary thermos lying at the bottom where there is a lake and many fresh fruits and wonderful people to make music and love with, o and insects and animals and comfortable shoes and carnivorous plants and omnivorous plants. Also there is a large grassy patch to run around and dance on. One could work up quite a thirst doing these things.
Otherwise, you were right on about there being a lot of dancing in his video.

well, (fashion note) he shouts out Pheobe Philo, who is this season's darling designer, for Celine. Also, that guy running in the opening shot is totally not Kanye.

Geez, I thought the album was pretty good, even pretty damn good. Definitely more inventive & exploratory than most other music coming out these days.
I just wish he'd smile a bit in his videos.
