Socks with Sandals goes all the way to the top
At Jon Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity last October, there was a man with a sign saying "Socks with Sandals" which I posted here. This is a cause I chauvinistically support. A picture was floating around the Huffington Post that showed George W Bush on vacation when he was president (it was in response to "should the President dress like this?" bullshit about Obama's casual wear in Hawai'i.) Look closely, I believe our movement has a new messiah. He's not only wearing crocks with socks, but the socks have the presidential seal on them!
I hereby Spearhead the Initiative to Introduce a Special Department of Socks with Sandals as a Special Sub-Department of the Department of Fashion (with Grainne's approval of course.)

Special Report: How to pronounce "Nevada"
The New York Times blog Opinionator just mocked East Coasterners for mispronouncing my home state:
[...] national broadcasters on election night who cannot pronounce Oregon (it’s like gun) or Nevada (it’s not Nev-odda) [...]

The name Nevada comes from the Spanish "Nevada" [neˈβaða], meaning "snowfall", after the Sierra Nevada ("snow-covered mountains") mountain range.
Most non-Westerners pronounce the name /nəˈvɑːdə/, with the /ɑː/ of "father" after the imagined pronunciation of the Spanish, which annoys locals. The most famous case of this was George W Bush's faux pas during his campaign for the 2004 US Presidential Election. Vindication later came when President Bush campaigned at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center on June 18, 2004. The president opened his talk by proclaiming that "It's great to be here in /nəˈˈvædə/," the crowd roaring its approval when he light-heartedly noted "You didn't think I'd get it right, did ya?"

Day One: Text Chatting the Former President

President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama
text chat with former President George W. Bush and Laura Bush on the Capitol steps.
The caption on their website has been fixed to eliminate the word "text", probably left over from the layout draft. But the idea of the new president "text chatting" the former president, especially when he's standing just right next to him, really heralds a new generation of leadership & the dawn of 21st Century American government.

Recipe: Inauguration Luncheon at Ashby Ave, Berkeley, California
Did you hear Barbara Feinstein, as she was commencing the post-Inauguration fancy luncheon? She said the most-viewed webpage at the Inauguration site was the one with the recipes for the lunch. So, in full anticipation that this will be my most popular blog post ever, I'm publishing the recipe for my post-Inauguration-live-weblogging lunch-in.
I suggest pairing this with a dark beer, the earlier in the afternoon the better, I recommend San Francisco's rich Anchor Porter ("because porter is the new black president, bitch" as the Tracy Jordon slogan goes). Merry New Administration!Obama Nachos
-Preheat oven to 350°
-Pour a bag of tortilla chips onto a pizza tray. (I used Casa Sanchez Thick & Crispy Gruesos, a bay area favorite brand.)
-Sprinkle with shredded Tillamook cheddar cheese.
-Black beans
-Bake until the cheese is melted
-Add salsa (Casa Chicas RedGreen salsa, delicious from Zacatecas, Mexico), & guacamole, creme, whatever you want, to your taste.

The Inaugural Address: It will be better than Harrison's & worse than Lincoln's
Look, it's a countdown clock. Today is Bush's last day. There is really a lot being written everywhere about all the inaugural address. There's a great article in the New Yorker here, by Jill Lapore, which follows the art of writing the address thru James Garfield's re-reading of his predecessors, procrastinating, & writing about it in his diary for posterity. (Garfield is pictured to the right in a sexy hat.) And there's an extremely useful interactive feature at the New York Times here. It shows what words were most used for each of the addresses, which is a good way to skim them all for content. William Henry Harrison is always mentioned when inaugural addresses are discussed, because he had the longest speech, & he is our briefest reigning president, not unrelatedly: it was standing out in the cold to ramble on for two hours, that he contracted pneumonia & died. Harrison's most used word was "power." (Creepily, "power" is high on the list for Kennedy & Garfield, who also died in office. Obama, please avoid that word.) The word "America" is only popular with Harding, Nixon, Clinton & Bush.
